Chaldon Herring

What to see

The village still consists of thatched cottages at its west end, while at the eastern side are more substantial houses and a snug village hall converted from a school. Only the north wall and tower of the original church have survived from the 14th century and the rest dates from 1978, including the amazing font.

The village is particularly associated with the three Powys brothers who lived here from 1904-1940 and the area is the setting for many of T.F. Powys’ novels. Other writers and artists have also been attracted to the village including Sylvia Townsend Warner and Elizabeth Muntz who are both buried in the churchyard.

The narrow ridge to the north of the village has a line of six well preserved barrow called the Five Maries (don’t count them!) which stand up clearly on the skyline.
