Moreton
An interesting and unspoilt village in woodland close to the heath with a gorgeous church and the grave of Lawrence of Arabia. On the main road are a couple of estate cottages and a former school house all with intricately latticed windows. Beyond the eccentric thatched Post Office is a footbridge over the River Frome which leads to Lawrence’s Cottage (Cloud’s Hill, now owned by the National Trust). Please see the Lawrence of Arabia page for more details. The church, which stands in a circular churchyard – a possible a pre-Christian religious site, was rebuilt in 1776 in an early Gothic Revival style. The north aisle was added in 1841 in a matching style. The church was severely damaged in 1940 destroying all stained glass and this has now been replaced with engraved glass windows by Lawrence Whistler. Each window is based on the theme of light and deserves close scrutiny, and the overall effect is magical. There are some 18th & 19th century monuments to the local Frampton family and T.E. Lawrence is buried in the churchyard extension.
