Tyneham
This deserted, but fascinating Purbeck village is set at the centre of the 7,500 acres used by the Army as a firing range. The village was evacuated in 1943 and no-one has lived there since, but the lovely valley is open to walkers whenever the firing range is not in use. Half a mile from the car park at Tyneham is Worbarrow Bay with its fine shingle beach curving around. There are short colourful cliffs of Wealden Bed sands and clays with beyond, huge chalk cliffs. At the top of the first chalk cliff the ramparts and ditches of Flower’s Barrow, and Iron Age hill fort, can be seen. See the visitor attraction pages for details of opening times. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
