Dorset Citizens’ Panel – Purbeck District Council

The Dorset Citizens' Panel is a representative group of 3000 members of the public from across Dorset.

The Panels are organised by Dorset County Council and Purbeck District Council has participated since 2008 with a section of questions for its own residents.  There are 500 participants for Purbeck and an average of 300 respond to each survey.

The Panel members complete postal surveys 3 times a year.  They may also be invited by Dorset Council Council to attend face-to-face consultation meetings from time to time.

Each year, a third of the Panel (1000 Members) is refreshed so that no Panel member can serve for more than three years.

To ensure that everybody in Dorset has an equal chance of being selected to be on the Panel, recruitment is based on random sampling methods. Volunteers for the Panel are not accepted.

The Panel is one of the ways in which we consult local people and find out their views.  This includes seeking the views of the users of our services and also the non-users, particularly in relation to front-line services such as  Environmental Services, Benefits, Development Control and the Sports Centre.

The questions vary each time.  Some questions are asked annually so that trends can be measured over time.  Other questions are one-offs where we need to ask views on a particular topical subject.

Purbeck District Council's Corporate Strategy expresses that it must be an effective, motivated and customer-focused organisation and have key targets to achieve its priorities for change, with measurable outcomes, for the District.   The results of the Citizens' Panel are an aid to the council's measurement of these outcomes.
