Equal Opportunities & Diversity
Equality and diversity is not about treating everyone the
same, but recognising and respecting differences and then treating
each other with fairness and dignity.
This Council's commitment to equality means that it will seek
to:-
“Ensure that all residents have equal access to fair employment
and equal access to services of a consistently high standard.”
This aim encompasses age, disability, gender, race,
religion/belief, and sexual orientation.
Comprehensive Equality
Policy (CEP)
The Council's CEP demonstrates the work the Council is
doing to improve access to Council services and employment, and to
promote equality amongst its partners and agents.
The CEP incorporates the following Schemes:
- Race Equality Scheme
The Race Equality Scheme, under the Race
Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, is the first step in ensuring that
the Council meets it obligations under this legislation. It
is also the start of a programme which is designed to
mainstream equality issues within the decision making process of
the Council.
- Disability Equality
Scheme
Taking account of disability issues is not
just about making reasonable adjustment; it is about removing
barriers and empowering disabled people to enjoy and pursue their
every day lives as much as possible. This scheme will assist
the Council in striving to ensure that the issues affecting
disabled people are fully embedded in all its working
processes.
- Gender Equality Scheme
The Equality Act 2006 places a duty on the Council to produce
its Gender Equality Scheme. We recognise that there are
gender differences in people’s life chances, what services they
gain access to and the types of jobs they do and are fully
committed to eliminating gender inequality and promoting equality
between everyone.
