Pest Control

From the 1st April 2009 the Council offers a service to control rats and mice at domestic premises for a small charge, currently £29.37 (inc VAT). This will normally involve a visit to assess the extent of the problem and the laying of poison at appropriate safe locations. Follow up visits may be required to ensure that adequate control has been achieved.
The need to control rodents
  • Rodents spread diseases to both man and other animals. Diseases are spread by parasites, bites, urine, droppings and skin contact.
  • They eat our food in fields, warehouses, factories, restaurants and homes. At the same time they contaminate food which has to be thrown away.
  • They cause damage by gnawing woodwork, water pipes, insulating materials etc. Gnawed electrical cables can cause electrical problems and in extreme cases cause fires.
Signs of a Rodent Infestation
  • Sightings.
  • Holes and nests.
  • Damage to building materials, packaging and food by gnawing.
  • Runs and smears occur where rodents use certain routes regularly e.g. from the nest site to a source of food.
  • Footprints and tail marks.
  • Droppings.
Brown rats
Rat facts
  • By far the most common rat in Britain is the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).
  • The brown rat is a burrowing animal and will live indoors, outdoors or in sewers and is equally at home in urban and rural environments.
  • Rats are omnivores and will eat almost anything.
  • Rats breed at an enormous rate. Litter size varies between 6-11,  and under ideal conditions 6 litters a year can be produced.
  • The brown rat exhibits a cautious approach to new objects, hence when poison or traps are used it may take a while before effective control is achieved.
Mice facts

mouse

  • The house mouse (Mus domesticus) is brownish-grey and possesses a thin tail that is much longer than the head and body.
  • Although mainly a house dweller, it may live outdoors for all or part of the year.
  • They are omnivorous and have a preference for cereals.
  • Average litter size is 5, with up to 10 litters per year being produced under ideal conditions.
