Why have we introduced the new scheme?
We have introduced the scheme for
many reasons:
1. The new scheme will help us reduce
environmental problems for future generations. We all have to take
responsibility for our own waste and can no longer just throw it
away without a second thought. Having an alternate weekly
collection encourages people to think twice about the rubbish they
throw away.
2. We need to reduce the amount of waste we
are currently sending to be buried in the ground at landfill sites
where it rots and creates greenhouse gases which increases global
warming problems. The landfill sites are filling up
nationally. We therefore need to segregate our waste and
recycle all that we can, rather than just throw it
away. We must act more responsibly and reduce the
future environmental problems by reducing our reliance on tipping
our rubbish into holes in the ground and hoping the problem will
just go away.
3. For every tonne of waste going into a
landfill site the County Council has to pay a Landfill Tax.
This is currently £24 per tonne, but is set to rise steeply so that
by 2009 it will be £40 per tonne. This will have a major cost
impact on the Council Tax and we therefore have to do all that we
can to divert waste from landfill and make it of some use.
4. All local authorities have to meet
statutory Government recycling targets so that as a nation we
reduce what we throw away and make further use of what we
discard.
