Dorset's Real
Nappy Campaign
The Dorset Recycling Group, of which Purbeck District Council
is a member, is encouraging parents to think about the benefits of
using real nappies instead of disposables.
Disposable nappies account for around 4% of the domestic
waste stream. Up to 40 black sacks of nappies per child per
year are currently sent to landfill. Disposable nappies take
a very long time to biodegrade - it has been suggested this could
be up to 500 years. Never has a product been so
inappropriately named!
Apart from the environmental savings in using real nappies,
you can also save money too! It is estimated that choosing
real nappies over disposables for your baby can save you up
to £600.
For further information on Real Nappy Week check out the
Women’s Environmental Network on their website
http://www.wen.org.uk/ or for a
leaflet on washable nappies contact your Health Visitor or
local council offices.
