Hear the Purbeck Smugglers' Tales

Journey back in time and hear smuggler tales of bravery,
secrecy and betrayal on Friday 29 May.
Participants will be able to travel down a
quarry shaft and listen to smuggler stories of old in an
enthralling atmosphere at the Townsend Environmental Study Centre,
Swanage.
Louise Robinson of the Purbeck Keystone
Project said: “The outdoor Townsend Centre has developed an
exciting and innovative replica of a quarry. The magical
evening will bring smuggling stories to life - an unforgettable way
to learn about the history of smuggling in the area. There
are also prizes for best dressed smugglers and pirates, so come in
fancy dress and live the experience!”
Visitors will be able to go down a shaft into
the working area of the quarry in complete safety and also see a
working ‘capstan and spack’ winch bring underground history to
life.
The event is open to ages 8 onwards and takes
place at 7pm on Friday 29 May at the Townsend Environmental Study
Centre, Cobblers Lane, Swanage, BH19 2PX. Places are limited
and should be booked in advance. There is a charge of £2 per
person.
