Around 250 children from Wareham Middle School learnt about
where their rubbish goes this week after visiting the local
recycling centres.

Accompanied by members of the Waste Management
team from Purbeck District Council the children visited the Eco
recycling site at Hurn which handles garden waste and the Recycling
Centre, also in Hurn, where other materials such as plastics,
glass, tins and paper are sent.
The trips coincide with the school’s recycling
week where, in addition to the visits to Hurn, the children learnt
to be creative with junk with a music workshop from the Weapons of
Sound, a band using instruments made out of rubbish. There will
also be a fashion show using plastic bags and old clothes and
activities including making table top sculptures from newspaper,
totem poles from carpet tubes and puppets from paper mache and old
fabric.
The Council has also provided educational
displays on where household waste goes, which are available in the
school for the week.
Iain Clark, Deputy Headteacher of Wareham
Middle School said: “Recycling is one of the best ways to be
environmentally friendly and it is great for children to see
exactly where their recyclable rubbish goes and how they can reuse
their waste so they think twice before they throw their drinks can
or sandwich wrapper away. I would like to thank the Parents
Association, John Cooper Committee, Purbeck District Council and
our staff for their support and enthusiasm which has made this week
such a success.”
Jan Dutton, Environmental Services Officer at
Purbeck District Council said: “We are pleased to support any
initiative that raises awareness among children about the need to
recycle. If we encourage them when they’re young then
recycling and reusing waste can become a natural part of their
daily routine for years to come.”
