Recycling - It's business as usual in Purbeck

Purbeck residents are
being reassured it’s business as usual for recycling, despite
national media reports.
Nationally, demand for some materials, paper in
particular, has fallen as a direct consequence of the global
economic slowdown. This has meant that demand, and therefore prices
for some materials, has dropped. However, demand does still exist
and for some materials, including glass, it remains strong.
Residents of Purbeck recycled 4299 tonnes of
waste last year and Purbeck District Council is reinforcing its
commitment to recycling as it continues to provide its recycling
service.
Cllr Paul Johns, spokesperson for the Built
Environment, said: “For the Isle of Purbeck, recycling has been a
great success story. 4299 tonnes equates to each household in
Purbeck saving 201kg* of waste from going to landfill sites in the
past year alone. Last year we had the second lowest waste
arisings per household in the whole of the UK, which is a great
achievement. We applaud our local residents for their
recycling efforts and really hope this fantastic achievement will
continue and improve in 2009”.
As a nation, we recycle around 9.7 million
tonnes of glass, paper, plastic packaging and other materials per
year. Between 2007 and 2008, the waste collected from households
alone and recycled is estimated to have saved 6.5 million tonnes of
CO2 equivalent – that’s the same as taking 2 million
cars off the road for a year.
