MAKE A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO REDUCE YOUR WASTE!

Recycle for Purbeck

It’s time to make a New Year’s Resolution so why not make one that you can stick to?

Up to a third of the waste that goes into our bins is food waste,– that’s like buying three shopping bags of food and throwing one straight in the bin!   By thinking about the food they buy, the average family could save over £600 pa and help the environment. Food waste rots in landfill sites and releases greenhouse-damaging methane.  Organic waste sent to landfill is unable to decompose properly and gives off methane which is twenty times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Councillor Paul Johns, Purbeck District Council said:  “A huge amount of our resources are wasted in the production, packaging, transportation and storage of food, which adds a great burden to our environment.”

Jan Dutton, Senior Environmental Services Officer at Purbeck District Council said: “If you reduce your waste not only will you be helping to save the planet, but your pocket too!  With climate change and the credit crunch what a fantastic way to do something really worthwhile in the New Year!”

The Love Food Hate Waste Campaign offers lots of advice on how to reduce food waste and has some tasty recipes too.  Contact the Love Food Hate Waste Helpline on 01305 225002 to find out more or visit the Love Food Hate Waste site.

Jan added:  “Why not compost too?  Even if you only have a small garden it will flourish with the lovely compost that you can make from fruit and veg peelings, tea bags, coffee grinds, egg shells and scrunched up paper, amongst other things”.  For more information on reduced rate composters go to Recycle Now or contact the Helpline for a leaflet, 0845 600 0323.

Much unnecessary paper is wasted through the junk mail that pops through our letter boxes!   Why not try to put an end to it by contacting the Mailing Preference Service? You can also email mps@dma.org.uk or phone 0845 703 4599. For more information ring the Helpline on 01929 557279.
