Discover Purbeck Rocks, Quarries and Dinosaurs On A Free Guided
Walk
A free guided walk around the quarries at Acton which will teach
people about the origins of Purbeck stone is taking place on
Saturday 18 August at 2pm.
Everyone is welcome on the walk which is being
lead by Alan Holiday, Chairman of the Dorset Important Geological
Sites Group, and supported by the Purbeck Keystone Project.
On route, Alan will talk about the origins of
the rocks in Purbeck, telling the story of how past climatic
changes have influenced the rocks and affected the animals over
time. There will also be the chance to search and identify fossils
with a little help from the amateur geologists.
The 2-3 hour walk will cover some uneven
ground and stiles to cross and will be at a pace suitable for the
group.
Those interested in taking part can just turn
up at the Acton car park, on the B3069 immediately west of Langton
Matravers, in time for a 2pm start. Walkers are advised to wear
suitable clothing.
