Salisbury Cathedral - Just A Stone's Throw
Away
A Purbeck working quarry is giving students
the opportunity to carry out masonry work to help restore Salisbury
Cathedral.
Landers Quarry, based in Langton Matravers, is
offering masonry professionals, students and apprentices the chance
to hone their skills at two five day Purbeck Marble workshops which
will be held between 23rd July – 3rd August
2007.
Funded by the Purbeck Keystone Project, the
aim of the course is to provide students with the opportunity and
experience of converting a raw block of Purbeck marble into
finished architecture entirely by hand as would have been done in
mediaeval times. The finished pieces will then be used to help meet
restoration needs at Salisbury Cathedral.
The courses, led by Treleven Haysom, will also
include a geological excursion and a talk on the mediaeval use of
Purbeck Marble. Treleven Haysom is the Warden of the Ancient Order
of Purbeck Marblers and Stonecutters and has worked on many great
mediaeval buildings including Westminster Abbey, Ely, Salisbury and
Exeter Cathedrals.
Jo Bowry, Project Manager at the Purbeck
Keystone Project said: “This is an exciting opportunity for people
to learn about masonry from the grass roots and celebrate Purbeck’s
landscape whilst at the same time help to keep a part of our
country’s heritage alive”.
