It’s all systems go for a new fitness suite at Purbeck Sports
Centre in Wareham as Councillors approved the ambitious £700,000
project to update the current gym facilities.
Offering the latest in leisure technology and
equipment the proposed fitness suite will give residents in and
around Purbeck new opportunities to kick start their health and
fitness regime.
The exciting plans will result in the Centre’s
fitness room being extended into the existing activity room giving
it a floor space of over three times its current size.
The new fitness suite will feature the latest
cardio and strength based equipment with each unit having the
technical facilities to monitor individual exercise programmes and
motivate the user to their maximum. Once open the fitness area will
be available to everyone all day every day, will have dedicated
changing rooms and will be fully staffed at all times.
A new exercise studio will also be built in
place of two of the existing squash courts with a mezzanine floor
installed to create a children’s soft play area that will feature
improved facilities for young children.
Solar panels will also be installed as a
source of renewable energy to offset the increased electricity
consumption of an improved facility.
The dual use Sports Centre, which is linked to
Purbeck School, is jointly funded by Purbeck District Council and
Dorset County Council and already offers a number of excellent
facilities including a 25m indoor heated swimming pool, the latest
in astro turf technology and the most up-to-date tennis
facilities.
The investment for the project by Purbeck
District Council will be paid for by the extra revenue the new
facilities are expected to generate over six years.
Work will begin in April with completion
anticipated for September. It is hoped that the work will be done
in phases to minimise disruption and to enable many of the centre’s
activities to continue unaffected.
Regular updates on the work’s progress will be
available at the Centre and on the Council’s website.
Cllr Mike Pratt, Sports and Recreation Adviser
for Purbeck District Council said: “The Sports Centre has
continually strived to commit 110% when improving its facilities
over the years illustrated by the installation of the latest in
astro turf technology, the availability of the most up-to-date
tennis facilities and a first class indoor heated swimming pool.
The new fitness suite will be no exception and these exciting and
ambitious plans will transform the Centre into a leisure and
fitness venue to rival any privately owned gym.”
Cllr John Hyde, Environment spokesperson for
Purbeck District Council: “As part of our commitment to the
Nottingham Declaration we are mindful of ensuring we offset our
energy consumption wherever possible. The installation of solar
panels at the Sports Centre is an exciting initiative that will
allow us to generate clean, renewable electricity to power the new
fitness suite in an energy efficient way.”
