Upton Dial-a-Bus Gets Green Light to Continue

Upton residents can continue to benefit from the Poole Dial-a-Bus Service for 2008/09 after Dorset County Council confirmed they would continue funding.

The scheme was introduced in 2007, after Purbeck District Council, Borough of Poole and Dorset County Council joined forces to extend the Dial-a-Bus Community Transport Service.

The Dial-a-Bus service collects passengers from home and takes them to Poole town centre, calling at Sainsbury’s, Shopmobility (where mobility scooters may be hired) and the Dolphin Shopping Centre.  The service then returns passengers after around 2 hours, with a fare costing £2.40 return.

Bookings can be made on Tuesday afternoons between 2pm and 5pm by telephoning the Poole Council for Voluntary Service on 01202 667187.

The service is only available to people unable to use ordinary buses due to problems with their mobility, along with their companions, should they need assistance with travelling. Passengers who travel in wheelchairs will need an assessment to establish whether their wheelchairs are transportable.

Those wishing to sign up to use the service should contact Purbeck District Council on 01929 556561 where an appointment will be made by a visiting council officer to help with registration.

Cllr Barry Quinn, Transport Spokesperson for Purbeck District Council, said: “I am delighted that Upton residents can continue to benefit from this essential service.  Helping people access services locally and meeting local transport needs is one of the Council’s top priorities.    We are one step closer to achieving this by working with the Borough of Poole and Dorset County Council to continue this community bus service.”

Councillor Mike White, Transportation Portfolio Holder, for Borough of Poole Council said:  "Dial-a-Bus provides a valuable community service and we are pleased that people in Upton will continue to able to benefit from it, especially those residents who find it difficult to access normal bus services
