Prior to the naming of any new streets forming part of a
development, or providing postal numbers for premises, it will be
necessary to submit details of your proposals to Purbeck District
Council for approval.
This is a legal requirement, and proposals must meet with the
Council’s general guidelines and are not ambiguous or misleading in
any way. The Ward Councillors and the Royal Mail Address
Management Centre will be consulted. Other interested parties
will be notified on your behalf following final approval. It is
therefore advisable to discuss this matter at the earliest
opportunity.
Developers of new properties or estates can request the use of
certain road names, clashes with existing road names within
the district cannot be accepted. The final decision on such
names will be taken by the Planning Board. New developments
are also officially numbered by the Council and these numbers must
be used on addresses in future. There can sometimes be
confusion, in the early stages of a development, with Plot numbers
that the builder may use.
House Names
The vast majority of houses already have numbers. An owner of
such a property is at liberty to add a house name if they so wish,
so long as the house number is also always used in the
address. Should such a name be changed, the Council does not
need to be informed.
Some small roads have not warranted a numbering system and house
names therefore form an essential part of the address. To change
the name of any such house will require the notification of the
Council.
