The Council is a "Category 1 Responder" under the Civil
Contingencies Act 2004. Duties under the Act include
preparing for any major emergency or disaster and either responding
to the incident itself or providing assistance to enable the blue
light services and other partners to respond.
The Council has a number of contingency plans in place to
enable a prompt and co-ordinated response to any such incidents,
including an emergency control and communications centre.
These contingency plans are tested regularly so the people of
Purbeck and our visitors can be confident that, should the
unthinkable happen, then plans are in place to enable the Council
and its partners to respond.
To help the Council fulfil its duties under the Act, and to
ensure consistency across the County, a Dorset Local Resilience
Forum has been established with groups working both at policy and
operational levels. Members of the Forum are currently
working on a number of initiatives including the development of a
Community Risk Register and Business Continuity Plans for each
District, both of which are new duties under the 2004 Act.
