South Purbeck Integrated Transport Project

The South Purbeck Integrated Transport (SPIT) Project ran from 2002 to March 2009. The funding to carry out the project work was made available by Dorset County Council through the Local Transport Plan.

The main aim of the project was to reduce congestion on Purbeck's roads, specifically around the Studland, Corfe and Swanage areas by promoting walking, cycling and using public transport as alternatives to the private car. The project was overseen by the Purbeck Heritage Committee.

Completed project work includes:

  • Tackling overnight parking on Ferry Road thanks to Purbeck District Council's Community Safety Officer and Dorset County Council.
  • Production of six cycle leaflets promoting on and off-road routes around Purbeck
  • Replacing road signs for Norden Park & Ride to encourage further use as a link to Corfe Castle and Swanage
  • New cycle stands in Swanage, Studland, Arne RSPB Nature Reserve, Corfe Castle Railway Station and Harmans Cross Village Car Park.
  • Works on Ferry Road to stop unauthorised vehicles gaining access to the Studland heaths
  • Creating a car park charging scheme for Corfe Castle to encourage the use of out of village car parks
  • Improving surfacing of a section of the Rempstone Cycle Ride at Greenlands Farm, Studland
  • Re-instating the footpath between Norden Park & Ride and Corfe Castle Visitor Centre
  • Improving the Purbeck Way walk between Corfe Castle and Ballard Down and Corfe Castle and Chapman's Pool
  • Updating the Rempstone Cycle Ride signs
  • Implemetation of the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 2 from Norden Park & Ride to Dorchester
