There have been various tv programmes and
movies filmed in Purbeck over the years, some are listed below.
Far From the Madding Crowd
Thomas Hardy’s novel about the headstrong Bathsheba torn between
three very different men. This version filmed in 1967 starred
Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Peter Finch & Terence Stamp.
Tess of the D'Urbervilles
Hardy’s novel about the unhappy fate of Tess set in motion when
her drunken father discovers their family can trace their ancestry
back to Norman nobility. Some of the film was shot at Swanage Pier
and town in 1998 and starred Justine Waddell. The later BBC
series in 2008 shot scenes at Dancing Ledge with up and
coming actress Gemma Arterton.
Mansfield Park
An adaptation of Jane Austen's third published novel about Fanny
Price who is sent to live with her mother’s wealthy but unwelcoming
family. Scenes were shot at Lulworth Cove for this 1998
film Starring Embeth Davidtz and Johnny Lee Miller.
Nanny Mcphee
Adaptation from Christianna Brand’s novels about a nanny with
magical powers. Starring Emma Thompson,
Colin Firth, Kelly MacDonald, and Derek Jacobi in 2005. The beach
scene where the children fly kites was shot on the beach at Durdle
