If you pay Council Tax and are on a low income or Income Support
or Jobseekers Allowance (income based) you can apply for Council Tax
Benefit, on top of any discounts or reductions
on your bill.
Council Tax Benefit assists people with low income by reducing
their council tax bill. Many people receiving Income Support or Job
Seekers Allowance, (income based) and Guaranteed Pension
Credit, pay no council tax.
Second Adult Rebate
Council Taxpayers who are single persons but have a
second adult living with them will not normally qualify for
the 25% single person discount. However, it may be that
the other adult is on low income and therefore cannot contribute
fully towards the Council Tax. In these circumstances the
Council Taxpayer may be able to get help, by way of
Second Adult Rebate.
Council Tax Benefit and second Adult Rebate is not awarded
automatically - both must be claimed. You can
apply online, or request
an application form by
e-mail
or telephone the Benefits Office on (01929) 557378 or
557240.
Normally benefit can only be awarded from the Monday following
the date a claim is received by the council.
If you are awarded Council Tax Benefit or Second Adult Rebate,
you must tell the Council immediately of any change in
circumstances that may affect your entitlement.
You should not withold payment or part payment of the council
tax whilst awaiting the outcome of your application.
