Wareham Town Walls Walk
Wareham Town Walls were originally built in Saxon times to defend the town from attacks against the Vikings. They surround the heart of the town on three sides (the fourth side being defended by the River Frome) and date from the 9th century. The walls now form a delightful walk around the town and are managed with conserving biodiversity (the variety of life) in mind. For example the attractive grasslands are cut to allow plants to flower and to benefit a variety of butterflies. A Walls Walk leaflet is available from the Purbeck Information and Heritage Centre, South Street, Wareham Tel: 01929 552740.
